Some children feel every little seam, label or bit of elastic. With underwear and pyjamas, which are worn right against the skin, that can make a real difference. So what should you look for if your child has sensitive skin?
From the choice of material to the smallest finishing details: a few simple pointers make choosing clothes a lot easier.
1. Choose soft materials with care
The fabric is a good place to start. Cotton is a comfortable choice for many children: it usually feels soft, it breathes and it absorbs moisture.
Look not only at the composition, but also at how a fabric feels. Not every cotton garment feels the same. The way the material is woven or knitted and finished helps decide how soft and supple it is.
For children's underwear and pyjamas this matters even more, because these clothes sit right against the skin.
2. Look at seams, labels and elastic
Comfort is often in the details. A thick seam, a scratchy label or a waistband that is too tight can make a garment much less pleasant to wear.
So look for:
- Soft, neatly finished seams that rub as little as possible.
- Comfortable elastic that fits well without pinching.
- Labels and finishes that do not irritate the skin.
- Plenty of freedom to move, while sleeping and while playing.
These details matter most in briefs, boxer shorts and vests.
3. The right fit makes the difference
Underwear should fit well, but never pinch. Pyjamas, on the other hand, can be a little looser, so your child can turn over and move easily in their sleep.
That is why you should not look only at the age on the label. Your child's height and build matter just as much.

4. What does OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 mean?
With clothes that are worn right against the skin, it is reassuring to know that the textiles have been tested for harmful substances.
OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 is an independent certification system that checks textiles against an extensive list of harmful substances.
Class I is the strictest product class and is intended for articles for babies and young children.
A certification does not automatically mean that clothing cannot cause a skin reaction, but it does give extra insight into how harmful substances are controlled.
5. Don't forget the wash
The way you wash clothes can also affect how comfortable they feel.
Wash new clothes before your child wears them, follow the care label and, for sensitive skin, choose a mild, fragrance-free detergent where possible. Avoid using too much detergent and make sure clothes are rinsed well.
That way the fabric stays comfortable and you limit possible irritation from detergent residue.
Comfort starts with the basics
The nicest clothes are the clothes your child does not have to think about. Soft on the skin, easy to move in and comfortable from the first to the last minute of the day.
